Cats descend from desert animals and have a weak thirst drive. By the time they seek water, they are often already behind. Moving water lifts intake — and that is the only real value a fountain offers.
This category has one of the higher return rates, mostly because people buy one and never use it.
Buy if: your cat has a urinary history
When a vet has advised more water intake, a fountain pays off immediately. This is not the place to save money.
Buy if: your cat eats mainly dry food
Cats on dry food get almost all their water by drinking. Cats on wet food need far less.
Skip if: you already wash the bowl and refill daily
Changing water twice a day works about as well. A fountain wins only when you cannot keep that up.
Filters are an ongoing cost.Filters need replacing every 2–4 weeks, which adds up to a fixed annual cost. Make sure they stay available — otherwise the machine becomes an ornament.
